The talented son of a prolific maritime painter. His early work is neat drawings of fishing vessels on tranquil seas. After 1670 he produced portraits of particular ships, naval battles, and storms at sea. His later work (after 1693) was more freely painted. Worked extensively on his father’s drawings.

Willem van de Velde’s major works are Ships in a Calm Sea, 1653 (St. Petersburg: Hermitage Museum);Dutch Vessels at Low Tide, 1661 (London: National Gallery); Ships of the Coast, 1672 (Vienna: Liechtenstein Museum).
