Italian painter born around 1300 and died around 1366. He worked in Florence. A major follower of Giotto, and perhaps his godson, Gaddi gave to the stern realism of his teacher a more accessible form: his paintings are more decorative, and he tells his pictorial stories in detail, with the inclusion of secondary episodes. Taddeo Gaddi’s major works include The Annunciation to the Shepherds (circa 1328, located in the Cathedral of Santa Croce in Florence), Madonna and Child on the Throne (1355, located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence), and The Sepulchration (circa 1360-1366, located in the Yale University Gallery in New Haven). The most expensive of the artist’s sold works is Christ Suffering with Sts. Peter, Francis, Paul and Andrew, sold in 1991 for $3,114,000.
