Sassetta was the best Sienese painter of the early Renaissance, who combined the old decorative style of the International Gothic with the new ideas from Florence. Note his evocation and immediacy.

Sassetta’s major works are St. Margaret, c. 1435 (Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art); San Sepolcro Altarpiece, 1437–44 (London: National Gallery); The Madonna and Child Surrounded by Six Angels, c. 1437–44 (Paris: Musée du Louvre); The Meeting of St. Anthony and St. Paul, c. 1440 (Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art).
