Years of life: 1599 – 1641
Artist's Teachers: Peter Paul Rubens
Art Movement: Baroque
Painting School: Flemish School, Antwerp School
Genre: Portrait , Religious , Mythology
Country: Flanders
Century: XVII

This remarkable artist was born in Antwerp, the son of a silk merchant. He is known mainly as a portraitist, especially those of the ill-fated Court of King Charles I of England who was beheaded in 1649.

As well as portraits, he painted on religious and mythological subjects (the stock in trade of all artists of the time). He also created landscape watercolors. His brilliant but restrained technique reflected the elegance and impeccable taste of his sitters with their long fingers, noses, graceful poses, and rich clothes of silk and satin. Even his martyrs suffer from perfect manners.

Note the aristocratic nature of his work. Van Dyck created a type of portrait that was often copied. His characters are cold, haughty, and reserved, they never smile and they know their duty and they will fight to retain their privileges to the end. He painted wonderfully sensitive images of children

Anthony van Dyck’s major works are Portrait of Charles V on Horseback, 1620 (Florence: Galleria degli Uffizi); Geronima Brignole Sale and her Daughter Amelia, c. 1621–25 (Genoa: Palazzo Rosso); James Stewart, Duke of Richmond with Lennox, 1635–36 (Private Collection); A Lady as Erminia, Attended by Cupid, c. 1638 (Oxfordshire: Bleinheim Palace).
