Landscape painter. Uncle of the better known Jacob van Ruisdael. He painted views of Holland. Among his later works are several still lifes with hunting themes.

His typical river landscapes consist of the following elements: mature trees on a riverbank; fishing boats; sailing boats with flags; cows; buildings on the horizon (town, windmill, church); cloudy skies; the sun, slipping toward sunset; reflection in the water. Composition always has a diagonal axis. He painted with broad, sweeping brushstrokes, using thin paint on a light ground; the grain of the panel often shows through.

Salomon van Ruysdael’s major works are Sailboats on the Wijkermeer, c. 1648 (Berlin: Staatliche Museum); Landscape with Medieval Castle, 1652 (Vienna: Liechtenstein Museum); Dutch Landscape with Highwayman, 1656 (Berlin: Staatliche Museum).
