Very prolific, successful artist. Traveled extensively (France, Prague, Vienna, the Alps). He settled in Utrecht. Created landscapes – his paintings are notable for their brilliant cool blues. Also painted flowers and mythologies. He is known for his painting of animals which he studied from life (including the dodo in Rudolph II’s menagerie). He is the author of good landscape etchings.
Roelant Savery’s major works are Flowers in a Niche, 1603 (Utrecht: Centraal Museum); Bouquet of Flowers (the Liechtenstein Bouquet), 1612 (Vienna: Liechtenstein Museum); Landscape with Birds, 1622 (Prague: National Gallery).
