Quentin Massys

Quentin Matsys, engraved by Johannes Wierix with Dominicus Lampsonius' poem
A representative of the Antwerp painting school, also known as Quentin Metsys. Massys visited Italy, where he studied the painting of Leonardo. Massys is best known for his portraits of bankers, tax collectors, and merchants and their wives. They abound in detail and are painted in a slightly grotesque style; perhaps the influence of Erasmus of Rotterdam, whom he met.
Quentin Massys’s major works are St. Anne, 1507–09 (Bruges: Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts); Portrait of a Canon, c. 1515 (Private Collection); The Adoration of the Magi, 1526 (New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art).
