Pisanello was very popular with princely courts as a painter, decorator, portraitist, and medallist, but few works now survive.

His work has qualities similar to those of illuminated manuscripts and has given an inconclusive art-historical debate as to whether Pisanello’s work belongs to the International Gothic or the Early Renaissance.

Pisanello’s major works are The Annunciation, 1423–24 (Verona: San Fermo); St. George and the Princess of Trebizond, 1437–38 (Verona: Santa Anastasia).
