Pietro Vannuccia was a hardworking, prolific, middle-ranking painter from Perugia, Umbria, hence his nickname: his real name was Pietro Vannucci. Trained in Florence, Raphael was trained in his workshop.

Perugino’s religious pictures are painted in a soft, pretty, simplified, and sentimental style. Some of his works suffer from a typical: the artist reused figures from other compositions unchanged. His portraits can be very good, tough, and direct, but his work declined in quality in later years.

Perugino liked slender figures with gently tilting heads and the weight on one foot. His Madonnas have oval faces, delicate fingers, and a genteelly crooked little finger; lips pressed together, the bottom one fleshy. The feathery trees and skies, milky on the horizon, graduating to deep blue at the zenith.

Perugino’s major works are Crucifixion with the Virgin, St. John, St. Jerome, and Mary Magdalene, c. 1485 (Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art); Mary Magdalene, 1490s (Florence: Palazzo Pitti).
