One of the most important Dutch landscape painters. He was a prolific and much-imitated painter, had many pupils. He often painted Dordrecht, sand dunes, ships, and the Nijmegen River. His paintings are in subdued browns and grays, enlivened by a flash of red or blue. They are characterized by attractive light, wide horizon, subtle gradations of color, and a sky with clouds. The artist uses a high viewpoint. He likes to depict knotty, gnarled oaks.

Jan van Goyen’s major works are Skaters in Front of a Medieval Castle, 1637 (Paris: Musée du Louvre); A Windmill by a River, 1642 (London: National Gallery); Fort on a River, 1644 (Boston: Museum of Fine Arts).
