The painting was not a main activity of the inventor. Van der Heyden is best known for still lifes and topographically accurate views of the Netherlands and the Rhineland with many fine details in the capriccio style.

Jan van der Heyden’s major works are A View in Cologne, c. 1660–65 (London: National Gallery); The Inn of the Black Pig at Maarsseveen, c. 1668 (Los Angeles: J. Paul Getty Museum).
