Jan Provost

He is one of the most notable and distinctive artists of the Northern Renaissance, who was formed without Italian influence. Met Dürer in 1521; follower of Massys. Painter of altarpieces, with figures that are lifelike for the time. Note the precise drawing (he trained as a miniaturist), delicate modeling, and a good sense of color.
Jan Provost’s major works are The Crucifixion, c. 1495 (New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art); A Christian Allegory, c. 1500 (Paris: Musée du Louvre); The Virgin in Glory, 1524 (St. Petersburg: Hermitage Museum); The Last Judgment, 1525 (Bruges: Municipal Museums).
