Jacopo Robusti Tintoretto

Self-portrait by Tintoretto, dating to around 1588. It was bought for Marie Antoinette with the chateau de Saint-Cloud in 1785. It is now in the Louvre.

His father was a dyer (tintore), hence the nickname, Tintoretto. Very little is known about his life. Although not very popular, he was one of the outstanding Venetian painters of the next generation after Titian; he is said to have trained briefly with the greatest painter of the Venetian School. Outstanding draftsman.

His monumental religious and mythological works are treated with drama, verve, hasty brushwork, scale—and sometimes the absurdity— of grand opera. He painted portraits of noble Venetians, but his busy studio produced many dull efforts.

If you find yourself in front of a strange painting by Tintoretto with an extraordinary off-center composition, try standing or kneeling to one side so that you view the work from an oblique angle: many works, especially large ones, the artist painted with the expectation that they would be in small Venetian churches, where the congregation had to kneel down, so they would look at the paintings from below or at a great distance.
