Real name Giovanni Francesco Barbieri Guercino, nicknamed “Guercino” means “crosseyed”. Self-taught, he worked in Bologna. He is considered one of the most important Italian painters of the seventeenth century but was neglected until recently. His best works are marked by naturalness, wonderful light effects, and coloring; he is the author of wonderful drawings. In 1621 the Bolognese Pope summoned him to Rome; he lost his spontaneity and became boringly classical.

Guercino’s major works are The Dead Christ Mourned by Two Angels, c. 1617–18 (London: National Gallery); The Woman Taken in Adultery, c. 1621 (London: Dulwich Picture Gallery); The Liberation of St. Peter by an Angel, c. 1622–23 (Madrid: Museo del Prado).
