In the 1630s he was a pupil of Rembrandt, but his works are lighter, less gloomy, and serious. Flinck was much esteemed in his own day. The Rembrandt Commission attributed several so-called Rembrandts paintings are now said to be by Flinck.

Govaert Flinck’s major works are Countryside with Bridge and Ruins, 1637 (Paris: Musée du Louvre); Young Shepherdess with Flowers, c. 1637–40 (Paris: Musée du Louvre); Angels Announcing the Birth of Christ to the Shepherds, 1639 (Paris: Musée du Louvre).
