The only member of the Utrecht School to establish an international reputation. In 1610-1612 he studied in Rome. His narrative paintings and allegorical decorative compositions were much favored by royal and aristocratic patrons. He is remembered for his amazing rendering of artificial light, especially when the source of light is hidden.

Gerrit van Honthorst’s major works are Christ Before the High Priest, c. 1671 (London: National Gallery); Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane (The Agony in the Garden), c. 1671 (St. Petersburg: Hermitage Museum); Christ Crowned with Thorns, 1620 (Los Angeles: J. Paul Getty Museum).
