Gentile was the brother of Giovanni Bellini and he was much respected in his own lifetime. was noted especially for panoramic views of his native Venice, peopled with crowds and processions; thus establishing a subject and tradition that reached its apogee in Canaletto. Many of his works have perished.
Gentile Bellini’s major works are Portrait of Doge Giovanni Mocenigo, c. 1480 (Venice: Museo Correr); Sultan Mohammed II, c. 1480 (London: National Gallery); Miracle at Ponte di Lorenzo, 1500 (Venice: Gallerie dell’Accademia).
