Francesco Parmigianino

Francesco Parmigianino

Self-portrait in a Convex Mirror (c. 1524, age about 21), Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

Years of life: 1503 – 1540
Art Movement: Mannerism (Late Renaissance)
Painting School: Parma School
Genre: Portrait , Religious , Mythology
Country: Italy
Century: XVI

He lived a short life, developed early as an artist, had great success (he was called the “Raphael reborn”). He came from Parma (northern Italy), where his contemporary Correggio also worked.

The figures in his paintings have oddly elongated proportions, impossibly long necks, and meaningful stares (especially in his later work). Note the distorted perspective and the variety of scales (his style was the epitome of Mannerism). Had a sophisticated line in erotica. His drawings are full of energy, dynamics, and light; he loved drawing as an activity for its own sake, as well as a tool.

Francesco Parmigianino’s major works are Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror, c. 1523 (Vienna: Kunsthistorisches Museum); Vision of St. Jerome, 1527 (London: National Gallery).
