A pupil of Rembrandt. Many of his works are very much in the master’s style, to whom his works have often been attributed. He did allegories and history paintings for public buildings. The dark colors of his paintings became lighter after the 1640s.

Ferdinand Bol’s major works are Jacob’s Dream, 1642 (Dresden: Gemäldegalerie); David’s Dying Charge to Solomon, 1643 (Dublin: National Gallery of Ireland).
