Duccio di Buoninsegna

Duccio di Buoninsegna
Years of life: 1255 – 1319
Artist's students: Ugolino di Nerio (?)
Art Movement: Renaissance
Painting School: Sienese School
Genre: Religious
Country: Italy
Century: XIII , XIV

Duccio di Buoninsegna was the founder of the Sienese school of painting of the XIV century. His painting is full of lyricism. Duccio was not as innovative in style as Giotto, who was his contemporary, but he is a wonderful storyteller. Notice how the people in his paintings act and communicate, and how he uses their surroundings to create a coherent story.

His characters have no-nonsense faces with long, straight noses, small mouths, and sly almond-shaped eyes. His hand gestures help to tell the story. He makes the perfect decorative use of color. Some of the oddities or quirkiness can be explained because his style is not actually of the Renaissance: it is essentially Byzantine.

Duccio’s major works are Maestà, c. 1308 (Siena: Museo dell’ Opera Metropolitana); Nativity, c. 1308–11 (Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art); The Apostles Peter and Andrew, c. 1308–11 (Siena: Museo dell’Opera Metropolitana); The Holy Women at the Sepulchre, c. 1308–11 (Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art).
