Also known as Dirk (Thierry) Bouts. Possibly he was a pupil of Rogier van der Weyden. Very little is known about him and few attributable works exist. He created altarpieces and portraits, restrained paintings with beautifully observed detail, and painstaking craftsmanship.
Dieric Bouts’s major works are The Annunciation, 1445 (Madrid: Museo del Prado); Portrait of a Man, 1462 (London: National Gallery); Justice of the Emperor Otto, 1470–75 (Bruges: Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts).
