He specialized in night scenes (dark and mysterious, with a full moon or lit by burning candles) and winter landscapes (with cold colors and lots of skaters). Oddly unsuccessful as a painter. He also failed as an innkeeper and went bankrupt.

Aert van der Neer’s major works are Sports on a Frozen River, c. 1600 (New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art); River View by Moonlight, c. 1645 (Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum).
