Born in Haarlem. Specialist in lowlife scenes of peasants. Warm earthy colors suit the mood of paintings. Over time, Ostade’s style and subjects change (possibly influenced by his marriage to a wealthy woman).

His brother and pupil Adrian Isaac (1621-1649) also initially turned to scenes from peasant life. Later he painted landscapes in silvery gray tones with genre scenes.

Adriaen van Ostade’s major works are Rustic Concert, 1638 (Madrid: Museo del Prado); A Peasant Courting an Elderly Woman, 1653 (London: National Gallery); An Alchemist, 1661 (London: National Gallery).
